Google is testing official sites at the top of AI answers

Google is testing a top section in some AI Mode and AI Overviews answers. It is for the one or two official sites that finish a task or give exact info. Each link gets a short note on why it helps. It is a test. Google gave no dates, countries, or criteria for what counts as official.
What Google said
Hema Budaraju, a VP of Product Management at Google, shared this in a Google The Keyword post on Oct 15, 2026. She wrote that sometimes there are one or two official places on the web. Those places complete a specific task or give the exact info you need. Google will test a new display in Search AI experiences. It puts those links in a dedicated section at the top of a response, with context about why each link is useful.
That expands on what Google already does to show links front and center when someone is looking for a particular site. The same post says Google has made continued and substantial increases to inline links, and will show them higher up more often. No size was given. Preferred Sources users are up more than 7x since the start of the year. That line is from Google's post only.
What was not said
Google did not say when the test starts or ends. It did not name countries. It did not explain how it picks which sites count as official. Treat it as a test, not a finished feature.
How I read it
Google may put the official site at the top of some AI answers. A local business wins when Google can tell which site is really theirs. That is the same boring work that helps in normal search. Same business name, address, and phone on the site, the Google Business Profile, and the directories that list you. One plain page per service.
What I would do
I would search the business name and check what shows up first. If a directory beats the real site, fix that before chasing new AI features. I would make name, address, and phone match everywhere. I would give each service its own plain page that says what you do and how to reach you. Gale owns NAP cleanup on Gman jobs. This post is the check a business should run, not a claim that Kim already did that work.
What to do next
Get Seen from Gman Creations builds website and Google-presence foundations, including search and AI-readable content basics. You send a brief or book a discovery, and you get a written scope and quote after we talk. The build does not start until that scope is approved. Sending the brief is not a purchase. It does not promise rankings or AI placement. An older post covers how ChatGPT traffic can show up as direct. Book a discovery when you want a human look: cal.com/shohgman/discovery.
FAQ
Is this rolling out everywhere?
No. Google called it a test. It gave no dates or countries.
How does Google pick which sites are official?
Google did not say. The Oct 15 post has no criteria for what counts as official.
What should a local business do right now?
Make it obvious which website is yours. Match name, address, and phone. Put each service on its own plain page. Search your business name and check that your site comes up before a directory.
Does this replace normal search links?
No. Google said it expands on showing links front and center when someone is looking for a particular site. Inline links are also being shown higher up more often. The new top section is an extra test, not a replacement for every link.
