ChatGPT traffic now shows up as direct

ChatGPT links dropped their UTM tag and referrer after GPT-6. Those clicks show as Direct. Check Direct before you decide AI stopped sending people.

ChatGPT traffic is getting filed as direct as of mid October 2026. Search Engine Roundtable covered it on Oct 14. OpenAI seems to have removed the UTM tags it put on ChatGPT links in June. With GPT-6, the links also drop the referrer, so analytics calls the visit direct.

What changed

Barry Schwartz covered it on Search Engine Roundtable on Oct 14, 2026. He wrote that OpenAI seems to have removed or replaced the UTM parameters it placed on links in ChatGPT results. The change seems to line up with the GPT-6 release a week earlier. OpenAI added those UTM tags in June. SER is not sure the removal was on purpose. OpenAI has not said.

Cedric Huesler from Adobe posted on LinkedIn, quoted by SER. He said GPT-6 opens links with no tag and no referrer. The quote SER printed says it drops ?utm_source=chatgpt.com. With nothing left for analytics to read, the visit lands under Direct.

The numbers

Huesler checked about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove at least 5% of visits. He compared Oct 9 to 13 with the week before. ChatGPT visits fell by about 31k a day. Direct visits rose by about 26k a day on the same pages. Search fell 7%, about the same as everywhere else. Direct rose on 2 in 3 pages that lost ChatGPT traffic. Sebastien Billard on X also reported a sharp ChatGPT traffic drop since Oct 9.

How I read it

A drop in the ChatGPT channel this month can look like people stopped clicking. On Huesler's sample, a lot of that traffic moved into Direct on the same pages. The chart can lie when the tag breaks. I would not treat a ChatGPT dip this week as proof that AI stopped sending people.

What I would do

If ChatGPT referrals fell this month, I would open Direct on those same pages for the same dates. I would put the two next to each other. I would wait for a full week before I rewrite a page or kill AI work. I would not decide from one channel alone when the tag and the referrer are gone.

What to do next

SignalGrade is the free check from Gman Creations for whether search engines and AI tools can read your homepage basics. It looks at seven basics, like the page title and whether the crawler rules file lets search engines in. Every finding shows its source. No account and no card. It does not track rankings or ask AI assistants about you, and there is no score out of 100. Anything it can't read is marked couldn't check. It does not measure ChatGPT referrals. An older post covers Google's spam update and scaled, low-effort pages. Book a discovery when you want a human look: cal.com/shohgman/discovery.

FAQ

Why does ChatGPT traffic show as direct?

Because the links no longer carry a UTM tag or a referrer. Search Engine Roundtable reported on Oct 14, 2026 that GPT-6 opens links that way, so analytics files the visit under Direct.

When did the UTM tags go missing?

OpenAI added UTM tracking to ChatGPT links in June. SER says the tags seem to have dropped with the GPT-6 release about a week before Oct 14, 2026.

Did OpenAI say it meant to drop the tags?

No. SER said it is not sure the change was intentional. The story has no OpenAI statement.

What should I check if ChatGPT referrals fell?

Open Direct on the same pages for the same date window and compare. Huesler's sample of about 500 pages saw ChatGPT down about 31k visits a day and Direct up about 26k a day.
