Google Business Profile menus now tag gluten-free dishes

Google Business Profile menus can now mark a dish gluten-free, dairy-free, halal or kosher. Tag a dish when your kitchen can back it up every time.

Google Business Profile menus can now tag a dish as gluten-free, dairy-free, halal, or kosher. Vegetarian and vegan were already there. The tags go on each menu item, not on the whole restaurant. You add them under Edit menu by picking a dish and checking the boxes. Tag a dish when your kitchen can back it up every time.

What changed

Barry Schwartz covered it on Search Engine Roundtable on Oct 13, 2026. He wrote that Google added gluten-free, dairy-free, halal and kosher for restaurants, next to the vegetarian and vegan tags that were already there. The news came from Lisa Landsman at Google, who posted it on LinkedIn and called it "Great news for local restaurants."

The screenshot in his post shows the Edit menu item screen. Under Dietary restrictions it says Select all that apply, with six choices: Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Halal and Kosher. The other half of the screenshot shows the menu with small Vegetarian and GLUTEN FREE tags under the dishes.

Landsman said the tags are for guests who search Maps or Search for a diet. She gave "gluten-free dinner near me" as an example. She said "tagged dishes help your items stand out right on your profile" when guests search that way.

What Google's help page says

Google's help page for the menu editor does not mention the new dietary tags yet. I checked it this morning. It does cover the basic steps. Go to your Business Profile, select Edit menu above the search results, pick a menu item, make your changes, and select Save. The page says changes can take 24 to 48 hours to show on Google Maps and Search.

There is one catch on that page, word for word:

Important: If you have a menu provided by the Business Profile API, you may not have this feature in Business Profile or Google Search.

How I read it

Barry raised a fair worry about kosher. He suspects there is very little checking, so guests have to trust the restaurant. I think the same goes for gluten-free and dairy-free. Someone who searches "gluten-free dinner near me" will read your tag as a yes and order the dish.

A dietary tag is a promise to the one guest who can't afford a wrong answer.

What I would do

I would sit down with the menu and the kitchen lead and go dish by dish. Tag a dish if it is made that way every day, whoever is on the line. If a dish shares a fryer or a pan with something that would break the tag, I would ask before I check the box. Halal and kosher get a yes when you can tell a guest how you know.

Barry's screenshot also has a dish called Salad Special (GF), with GF stuffed into the name. Once the tag is on, the name can just be the name. After you save, wait two days. Then look up your place on Maps, open the menu, and see what a stranger sees. If you can't find Edit menu at all, your menu may come in through the Business Profile API. Then the change has to happen wherever that feed is run.

What to do next

Get Seen is the Gman Creations service for websites and Google presence. Part of it is help setting up or improving an eligible Google Business Profile, with accurate details and a link to your website. After we talk you get a written scope and quote, and nothing gets built until you approve it. Get Seen does not promise rankings. Google makes its own calls on what shows. An older post covers what people see on Maps reviews when they are not signed in. Book a discovery if you want a person to look at your listing: cal.com/shohgman/discovery.
