One rank check is not the market
Yext’s Places Scout set found mobile organic results varied 48.7% more across nearby pins after mid-May 2026. One desk ranking is a weaker market description than before.
Yext Research, using Places Scout data raised by Joy Hawkins of Sterling Sky, found mobile organic results varied 48.7% more across nearby locations after mid-May 2026 across 8.16 million SERP snapshots. 97.8% of matched reports increased. Explicit location queries rose 76.3%. The classic mobile 3-pack and Maps barely moved. One desk ranking is a weaker market description than before.
Yext counted 8.16 million location-specific organic snapshots. After mid-May 2026, mobile organic results varied 48.7% more from pin to pin. Almost every matched report moved the same way. Searches that already named a city rose 76.3%. The map pack barely twitched.
I read the actual announcements instead of the coverage.
This is geographic difference during the same report run, not day-to-day rank bounce. Two nearby searches of the same phrase can return different ordered organic lists. A screenshot from your office can be accurate and still miss the market a customer three blocks over sees.
What moved, and what barely did
In that Places Scout set, mobile organic geographic variation jumped. The classic mobile three-pack changed about 2.4%. Maps changed about 2.8%. The study overlaps Google’s May core update timing. It does not prove the update caused the shift. Cite the Yext Research write-up and the Sterling Sky note when you use the figures.
Most people don't have a workload problem. They have a systems problem.
The systems problem is measurement
The systems problem here is measurement. Confidence is not correctness, and the machine is never going to be the one that tells you the difference. A green "#2" in a tool is confidence. The handover is not ground truth. Last week’s report is a handover. A rule without a script is a wish. "Check rank once a week" without a grid, a device split, and a call count is a wish.
What to do next
If you want a plain read of homepage basics search and AI tools can actually parse, SignalGrade is the free Gman Creations check, with the source for every finding. It does not invent a rank. It starts from what is on the page. Presence foundations that both search and AI systems can use sit under Get Seen. Book a discovery if you want a human look next: cal.com/shohgman/discovery.

FAQ
Did the classic map pack get more volatile too?
In the same Yext / Places Scout set, mobile classic 3-pack volatility changed only about 2.4%, and Maps about 2.8%. The big jump was in mobile organic results across nearby locations.
Does one accurate rank screenshot still help?
It is still a real observation from one phone in one place. It does not describe what nearby phones see for the same query. Treat it as a sample, not the market.
What should you measure instead of a single desk check?
Pattern across locations, devices, and outcomes such as calls or leads. A green number without that pattern is confidence, not a full read of the market.
