Google Maps put some service-area pins in the ocean

Some Google Maps pins for service-area businesses land in the ocean. Service shade can look right while the public pin is wrong.

A Google Business Profile bug puts some map pins in the ocean. It hits some service-area businesses that hide their street address. Search Engine Roundtable covered it on Sep 29, 2026. Barry Schwartz reports Dipa Gandhi saw the service shade right while the pin sat in water. Not a one-off. Open the public Maps view and check the pin.

Some service-area pins are sitting in the ocean.

Barry Schwartz wrote it up on Search Engine Roundtable on Sep 29, 2026. A Google Business Profile bug places some Google Maps pins in the middle of the water. It reportedly hits some service-area businesses that keep their street address off the public listing. Dipa Gandhi spotted it first on LinkedIn. The service area shade looked right. The pin sat in the ocean. She said it was not a one-off and that she was seeing it on many profiles. Others confirmed in the LinkedIn comments. Schwartz recalls an older case when Google dropped businesses in the middle of America. He assumes Google will fix it. He also asks whether Google is aware yet. That awareness question stays his, not ours.

I treat the public Maps pin as the artifact. The manager screen is not what strangers hit. Service shade can look fine while the pin is wrong. That is the view a stranger gets when they decide whether to call.

Most people don't have a workload problem. They have a systems problem. The systems problem here is trusting the dashboard claim and never opening the public pin.

Why the public pin belongs on the checklist

If the pin lands in the ocean, strangers see a location that is not your service story. SignalGrade at Gman Creations is a free check of homepage basics search and AI tools can parse. Every finding comes with a source. It does not invent a rank. It starts from what is on the page. The public Maps pin is the same kind of check: look at the artifact, not the report.

If a stranger opens your listing on Maps tonight, where does the pin land?

FAQ

Which businesses are seeing pins in the ocean?

Search Engine Roundtable says the bug reportedly hits some service-area businesses that hide their street address on the public listing. It is not framed as every service-area profile.

Can the service area look right while the pin is wrong?

Yes. Dipa Gandhi reported the service area drawing correctly while the profile pin sat in the ocean. That is the gap to check on the public Maps view.

Is Google aware of the ocean pin bug?

Barry Schwartz assumes Google will address it, and he asks whether Google is aware yet. Treat that as his open question, not a confirmed Google statement.
