Google Local Services ads can charge for missed calls

A missed call or voicemail during your profile hours can now be a paid Local Services ads lead. It counts once the caller stays past 20 seconds.

Google's Local Services ads help page now spells out when a missed call costs you. Say you miss a call during your business hours. If the caller stays on the line past 20 seconds, it can be charged as a lead. Voicemail counts too. Google takes those hours from your Google Business Profile.

On Local Services ads, your profile hours are also your billing window.

What Google's page says

Barry Schwartz covered the update on Search Engine Roundtable on Oct 8, 2026. I went to Google's own help page, How leads work, and read the rules there. Under valid leads, Google lists this:

You missed a phone call during your business hours and the customer stays on the line for more than 20 seconds.

The FAQ on the same page covers voicemail:

Voicemail or greeting without a key press: If a call goes to voicemail or an automated greeting during your business hours, it's treated as a connected call and is charged if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, whether or not they leave a message.

It also says where the hours come from:

"Business hours" are the hours you set in your Google Business Profile, which you can update at any time.

Google's page does not show the date the wording changed, so I won't guess one. This only matters if you pay for Local Services ads.

The other rules on the page

Phone menus. If your system asks the caller to press a key and they hang up first, there is no charge. The 20 second timer starts at the first key press.

Ad schedule. If your ad schedule is different from your profile hours, missed calls are only charged when the call falls inside both.

Repeat calls. Once a lead is charged, calls or messages with that customer within 15 days are not charged again. They have to come from the same phone number or email.

Lead status. Each lead shows as Charged, Not charged, In review, or Credited. Google keeps checking lead quality for 30 days and credits poor, duplicate, or invalid leads on its own. Google says automatic credits are not offered in the EEA.

How I read it

Picking up is not the problem. Google's FAQ says the 20 second rule only applies to calls nobody answers. So the risk is hours on your profile that run past the hours someone picks up, and a voicemail that answers for you. Here is a made-up example. Your profile says open until 7, but the crew is gone at 5. A call at 6 that rolls to voicemail can still be a paid lead.

What I would do

Check your profile hours against the hours a person really answers. Set holiday hours before the holiday, not after. Look at the Charge Status column on the Leads page once a week. Then call back every missed caller the same day. You already paid for that lead, and a callback within 15 days is not charged again.

What to do next

Offload is the Gman Creations service for one recurring task, built around the tools you already use. The example on the page is a new inquiry. Details land in the right place, missing fields get flagged for a person, and a follow-up draft waits for review. A person approves the steps that matter, and you can pause it. We talk through the one task before any work starts. If your profile hours need fixing, Get Seen includes help improving an eligible Google Business Profile with accurate details. An older post explains why one recurring task is enough to start. Book a discovery when you want a human look: cal.com/shohgman/discovery.

Wrong hours annoy customers. On Local Services ads, they can also cost you a lead fee.

Am I charged if a call goes to voicemail?

Google says yes if it happens during your business hours and the caller stays on past 20 seconds. It doesn't matter whether they leave a message.

Which hours does Google use?
