Google local panels are showing a WhatsApp button
Google Search local panels are showing a WhatsApp button on some listings. Claimed profiles can add WhatsApp under Contact, Chat, in select regions.
Google Search local panels are showing a WhatsApp button next to Call, Directions, Website, and Share on some business listings.
A chat button only helps if someone answers it.
What was spotted
Sachin Patel spotted the button. Search Engine Watch covered it on Oct 5, 2026. Barry Schwartz replicated it on Search Engine Roundtable on Oct 7, 2026, and said it might be rolling out more widely. Google has not posted a public note about the panel button itself.
What Google's help page says
I opened Google's Business Profile help page on chat with customers. The rules are already there for owners who want WhatsApp on the profile.
Businesses with a claimed and verified Business Profile can add a WhatsApp or text messaging option to their contact info.
Important: Chat options are currently available for select regions and might not be available for your Business Profile.
The steps are Edit profile, Contact, then Chat. You pick WhatsApp or text message, add your WhatsApp click to chat URL or a textable phone number, and save.
If you add both options, only the text message option will be shown to customers.
Different Business Profiles can use the same WhatsApp link.
How I read it
The panel button is an observed rollout, not a dated Google launch. If your region offers Chat and your profile is claimed and verified, WhatsApp can sit next to Call. That only works if the Chat field holds a real WhatsApp link. If text messaging is also set, customers see text instead.
What I would do
Open Contact, then Chat. Add a WhatsApp number someone on your team answers. Skip text messaging if you want WhatsApp to show. Then check your own listing in Search and look for the button.
What to do next
Get Seen is the Gman Creations service for websites and Google presence. It includes help setting up or improving an eligible Google Business Profile, with accurate details and a link to your website. You get a written scope and quote after we talk, and the build does not start until you approve that scope. Get Seen does not promise rankings, and Google makes its own calls on verification. An older post covers Google's misuse rule for Business Profile support. Book a discovery when you want a human look: cal.com/shohgman/discovery.
A WhatsApp button on the panel is only as good as the person who picks up the chat.
